The shout suspended

Responding to the notion of different locations interacting, I want to create works which evoke the range of attachments felt towards an assortment of sites; those that are distant: those of ones upbringing: those sought: those walked within: those of importance to others. A constant strand running through this work is an exploration of how our surroundings are both informing of and formed by our sense of who we are.

As an attempt at weighing the complex emotions we project on to our surroundings I seek my works to transmit a mixed atmosphere of detachment, sentimentality, and topological uncertainty. Though observing of the laws of gravity these painted situations are suspended in a fragile seemingly temporary state, pinned down by an odd architecture. Through employing painterly techniques of acute shifts in mark making, paint consistency and colour interaction I want my paintings to burrow in to the experience of site.

For me the act of painting is fertile and absorbing; it is a space of transformation, invention, reflection and surprise. My process of painting is a kind of search where an initial proposition is substituted by something new and unfamiliar, I cultivate this as a way of producing unexpected and at times perplexing results.
